From the time of her stage debut in Kentucky in 1875, American actor Mary Anderson (1859–1940) enjoyed a career of uninterrupted success on both sides of the Atlantic. Admired for her beauty and for her dramatic talent, she was especially known for her Shakespearean roles. In 1889, at the height of her powers, she abandoned the stage, possibly in response to hostile reviews in the American press. She married Antonio de Navarro, a wealthy fellow American, and settled in Broadway, where she became a popular and charming hostess to Sargent and his circle. Her sense of style and her warmth shine through in this drawing, created decades later. The sweep of her hair and the stylish scarf wrapped around her neck soften the classic profile.
